Birth litigation UK
Expenses
A guide to working out expenses
Your birth litigation claim should reimburse parents for many of the expenses and items they have purchased over and above that which they would have done for an uninjured child following settlement. Also for mileage and parking to such things as appointments.
At some point you will be asked to compile a list of all the additional expenses. I would advise starting this list and keeping all receipts/invoices etc at the earliest opportunity.
If you didn’t remember to do this, a good way is to look through old emails as there will often be confirmation orders there. If your app only goes back so far, logging into the email from a browser on a PC, is often more complete and will print out the hardcopies for you.
I’d say certain headings would be helpful, but it depends on how severely your child is affected and listing items associated with that condition. We have a severely affected child so our list is extensive. I’ve not listed the prices, but obviously you would.
You will also have mileage and parking at various hospitals and hospital appointments, but your legal representative will have your child’s medical records which show all appointments. They will usually go through the appointments for you and work out mileage.
Expenses relating to care and the time and effort used to provide 24/7 care is a different issue, and this is worked out in Interim when these care costs are assessed for financial compensation. You will usually need to do a care diary, but simple expenses are relatively easy to compile, once you have a checklist.

As you can see the list is huge and this is by no means covering the needs of all children. I’ve suggested different areas to look at to jog your memory if you haven’t kept of been able to find records of purchases. Hopefully, this does help in starting to compile your lists and to work out costs of all these items. For associated disabilities such as those below, I’ve added a few ideas, but it’s outside my personal experience.
