Sometimes the most powerful therapy is just a pause. 

Emotional wellbeing is very important to parents and carers of disabled children. The impact of a disability, particularly if it is avoidable can affect the whole family, especially siblings. If the psychological impact of the birth causes such issues as PTSD, anxiety and depression, they may be a case for parents who witnessed the birth. Mental Health via NHS

You can access help for PTSD/ anxiety/depression via your GP or direct contact. 111 can also give guidance.

Social Media

Social media is a great way to interact with families in the same situation as yourself. However do be aware SM is never going to be wholly secure. See my blog post on ‘Social Media’. Facebook have some very good pages to support and advise parents.

Born at the Right Time

A website with support for ‘Parents as Partners’, offering support and advice, paid for training videos (some free), articles and blogs on parenting a disabled child.

PEEPS HIE

A charity to support parents of HIE babies (but will apply to any brain injury). Some services include: information about HIE
Buddy/peer support
Counselling and therapy
Funding for equipment etc.

Local Authority Help

Available via your LA: short break services, holiday play schemes,
care at home,
some aids and a grant for home adaptations,
financial help, eg money towards travel costs for hospital visits. Social services will do a ‘needs assessment’

SENSE

A comprehensive run down of the benefits and entitlements parents of disabled children can claim, including carer’s allowance. It includes a Turn2us benefits calculator.

AvMA

A charity offering to provide practical advice about what options are open to you following a medical injury. They’ll explain some of the jargon and systems, help you decide what to do next and put you in touch with other sources of support if needed.

Family Fund

A charity offering grants for digital equipment, clubs and activities, transport and much more. They help children and young adults and can provide useful equipment, such as iPads, funding towards a break, etc.

Help with birth trauma

If you’re a parent who’s been traumatised by birth, we’re here to help. We have a team of peer supporters: parents (one of whom is a dad) who have all experienced traumatic birth themselves and been through a process of recovery

NHS Help with physical activity

No matter how much you do, physical activity can make a big difference to how you feel – boosting our mood and helping to reduce symptoms of anxiety and stress.

We know that HIE is complex, and there is much uncertainty, grief and trauma to process. We were founded first as a peer support group, and have grown to provide comprehensive support programming and resources for families

APNI Association for post natal illness

Provides support to anyone suffering from or affected by post-natal Illness including partners, family/friends and increase public awareness of the illness

PaNDAS PND awareness and support

Our FREE PANDAS Helpline is available from 11am-10pm every day. Our dedicated volunteer team are on hand to offer support and advice, and can help to direct you to other organisations, if necessary.

Caudwell Children

We do whatever it takes to help change the future of disabled and autistic children by providing diagnosis, equipment, services and support to help them lead a full and active life. Offers support for parents and families

Sibs

Siblings have a whole mixture of feelings and experiences as part of your family life. Some of these are positive and enjoyable, and some of these can be negative and difficult. This is normal. Support for siblings of disabled children.
